Amal

Full transcription coming soon. The entire audio interview is available above.

Amal is a DJ in Washington, D.C., who grew up in Montgomery County, Maryland.

“At first, I was kinda like bummed out. I mean like every other musician just kinda saw their gigs just kinda drop like flies. Like within – I kid you not- within 72 hours my gigs from now until September had all been cancelled. It was so weird it was just like….very surreal. You’re just like “What the heck is going on?” So at first I was like, “Yo, like I don’t – what career?” Like, this is it.”

Interview highlight:

“Well, not being able to do shows is, is the weird part because I had gotten so used to, like, having to DJ something between Thursday and Sunday for like, consistently, you know? For like six months – and that’s a good thing, that’s like a very good thing. We had like a game plan of what was happening. And typically, as a DJ, you kind of know, like, what you’re doing for the next four or five months, majority of the time. So, for me I already knew what my summer was looking like up until like, fall, really. I knew, I had an idea of where I was gonna be like gig-wise and stuff like that.

At first, I was kinda like bummed out. I mean, every other musician just kinda saw their gigs just kinda drop like flies. Like within – I kid you not- within 72 hours my gigs from now until September had all been cancelled. It was so weird it was just like….very surreal. You’re just like “What the heck is going on?” So at first I was like, “Yo, like I don’t – what career?” Like, this is it.

But then like, you know time passed and I realized like. That’ll come back. And it’s like, you feel a bit like ‘Dang, I’m back at square one.’ But it’s like: no, you’re not. I’m not at square one, you know, I did all those things and it’s not gonna be anything to do ‘em again or to get back to that place, so you kind gotta like look at what you did for the past year, or however long and be like: you know, you’re not regressing. There’s no regressing, ‘cause everyone’s just paused but there’s no like – it’s a shift in the course but it’s not going backwards.”
