Becky

Full transcription coming soon. The entire audio interview is available above.

Becky is a high school teacher and mother of three. She lives with her husband and her youngest daughter, who is in middle school.

“I asked [my students], ‘what–what do you miss the most?’ and what they all said was, ‘I miss being with my friends, and hanging out with my friends.’ So, I think school is such a social, social thing for all the kids, you know, and I think that they would rather be at school.”

Interview highlight:

“Academically, I feel like [my students] have lost motivation, um, because the way that— I know that the way that my county is handling this is it’s now a “pass/fail” grade and they basically only have to do fifty percent of the work, so, kids these days are so focused on their grades, and points, so they’ve got it figured out. Some kids have not done any of the work I’ve posted because, the bottom line is, it wasn’t gonna make their grade— it wasn’t gonna do anything to benefit them and they’re happy with their grade the way it was. So, they’ve lost motivation, and the one question that most of them answered in the chat box when I asked, I said, ‘What–what do you miss the most?’ And what they all said was, ‘I miss being with my friends, and hanging out with my friends.’ So, I think school is such a social, social thing for all the kids, you know, and I think that they would rather be at school.”
